Celebrating being "weaned from crutches" (Dr. Sandman, my doc), here's more happy music:

What happened was a student ran into the classroom late, just as I had turned to go wash my hands from helping a table of other pastel painters. We collided and the landing on cement brought me to several doctors, x-rays, MRI, and surgery. From the blurry new year to today, after seeing the orthopedic surgeon and having more x-rays, I remembered this fun music I'd wanted to share some time ago. With a hint of Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, and a dash of Colbie Caillat, here's Eric Hutchinson:

"There are 45 other children who now live at the Agape orphanage. They range in ages from 12 months to 18 years. Most of the children have lost their parents to AIDS.
Agape was founded by a lady called Gogo "Grandma" Zodwa. She was working as an HIV counselor and found that many of the people she was counseling expressed deep concern about what would happen to their children when they were no longer around. So Zodwa established Agape to look after these children. Agape has had a tumultuous journey, but under Zodwa’s loving guidance it continues to grow stronger. Agape is a Greek word meaning 'unconditional love', which is exactly what the children at Agape receive."

Of the ones I knew, four of my schoolmates didn't make it back, but I'm sure there were more. When I touched the names inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., that's when I wept. One lived on one end of my street, and another at the other "T" end of my street. Richard and Donald, they were older--the oldest brothers in each family. Then there was one classmate who had argued as a "hawk" and another as a "dove" in government class. Neither Tom nor Robert returned. Our neighbor's brother made it back. I had a date with him the summer he returned. We laughed so much.

The Langley Schools Music Project is a 60-voice chorus of rural school children from western Canada, untrained but captivated by melodic magic, singing tunes by the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, The Bay City Rollers, and others. The students accompany themselves with the shimmering gamelan chimes of Orff percussion, and elemental rock trimmings arranged by their itinerant music teacher, Hans Fenger.
