"Sittin' on a Rainbow . . . Hearts Dancin' in Our Eyes"

Thanks to Luke Strauss for reminding me how John Prine's real, good, sweet music reaches way down deep. A few years ago, after hearing just the chorus of one of his songs, I bought the CD--and some for my friends. My favorite is the one with Iris Dement, singing "In Spite of Ourselves."

Rainbows over Tomah, Wisconsin, home of longtime artist friend Marita Root, 90, who titled her memoir, The First Ninety Years. A beloved school teacher, missionary to Africa, art director for Scripture Press and David C. Cook publishers, and still painting commissioned works, she's funny, wise, full of spunk, and active at Fairview Village near Chicago. She dearly loves her Chicago teams, the Cubs and Da Bears.

"There are 45 other children who now live at the Agape orphanage. They range in ages from 12 months to 18 years. Most of the children have lost their parents to AIDS.
Agape was founded by a lady called Gogo "Grandma" Zodwa. She was working as an HIV counselor and found that many of the people she was counseling expressed deep concern about what would happen to their children when they were no longer around. So Zodwa established Agape to look after these children. Agape has had a tumultuous journey, but under Zodwa’s loving guidance it continues to grow stronger. Agape is a Greek word meaning 'unconditional love', which is exactly what the children at Agape receive."

Of the ones I knew, four of my schoolmates didn't make it back, but I'm sure there were more. When I touched the names inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., that's when I wept. One lived on one end of my street, and another at the other "T" end of my street. Richard and Donald, they were older--the oldest brothers in each family. Then there was one classmate who had argued as a "hawk" and another as a "dove" in government class. Neither Tom nor Robert returned. Our neighbor's brother made it back.
